Why was alexander considered great?
Hi, my name is Lysander Plato. I am apart of Alexander’s military. I am writing this to give all of you who are not familiar with Alexander knowledge about him and his legacy. Alexander took control of the Macedonian empire when he was twenty one years old. Many believe that Alexander was great because he was trained by Aristotle or that he tamed Bucephalus, the untamable horse. I think Alexander was great because when he would conquer a village or a city-state he would let the people keep their religion. This helped the people preserve their religion and helped the people keep their religion alive.alexander believed in cultural diffusion. I also believe that Alexander was considered great because of his leadership. Alexander was said to have never lost a battle. Alexander conquered Greece, Persia, and Egypt.
Alexander’s objective was not only to have a successful military and be a good politician. Alexander believed in cultural diffusion. Alexander’s cultural policies led to the Hellenistic culture. The Hellenistic culture was a mixture of the Egyptian culture, the Persian culture, the Greek culture, and the Indian culture. There were Hellenistic cities that spoke the language Koine. Koine comes from the Greek word for “common”. Koine connected Hellenistic cities and allowed educated Hellenistic traders to communicate. All of this was because of Alexander’s cultural blending. Alexander’s cultural blending led to cities like Alexandria. Alexandria’s was one of the largest hellenistic cities at it’s time. Alexandria aided Alexander’s empire greatly. Alexandria widened Alexander’s empire’s knowledge greatly of the sciences. Alexandria had many astronomers that altered everybody’s perspective of science.
Compare Alexander to another historical figure who carries the idea of being great. Has time changed the idea of this person?
Alexander was much Dwight D. Eisenhower like in a sense that they both fought in battle and ruled. Dwight D. Eisenhower and Alexander were both strong military leaders. Dwight D. Eisenhower was the commander of the troops that were invading France on D-Day. Dwight D. Eisenhower led his troops to many victories. Alexander and Dwight D. Eisenhower both shared a love for knowledge. Dwight D. Eisenhower attended West Point and after the war he became the president of Columbia University. Alexander was tutored by Aristotle. Dwight D. Eisenhower was and still is a respected military commander and president.

ReplyDeleteThe extra information about the languages spoken in Hellenistic Cities was really interesting, I also really liked comparison between Alexander and Dwight Eisenhower. Also, the information about who tutored Alexander and his childhood was very interesting.
ReplyDeleteCaleb, I really liked that you were able to compare Alexander the Great to someone that most people would not have even thought about. I definitely would have overlooked Dwight Eisenhower as a possible figure in History to pick.
